Shooting in Colorado, massacre in a supermarket: 10 dead

He walked into King Soopers in Boulder, in Colorado, a supermarket, and opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle. It is a script already seen that of the umpteenth massacre in the United States. Ten people died including the first policeman who intervened, the agent Eric Talley, 51 years old, in service since 2010.

It is the second shooting in less than a week, following the assault on Atlanta massage centers which resulted in 8 deaths. It is the signal that Joe Biden also faces a problem that has been faced by all American presidents in recent years: weapons, including automatic and assault weapons, which are for sale with very few restrictions in the United States. The umpteenth shooting takes place in a state already severely affected: the massacre of Columbine High School and that of the Aurora cinema at the first screening of the film Joker.

The police chief of Boulder Maris Herold speaks of a “tragedy”, but also says that “the community can rest assured: there are no more dangers”. The alleged killer was stopped.

The first alarm went off around 2.30pm local time. At 14.49 a police tweet asked everyone to stay away from the area. The first agent who intervened, Eric Talley, was already dead by now, struck by the killer, leaving his wife and seven children. The police then arrived in force and ordered the gunman to surrender. He left the supermarket a white man handcuffed, wearing only a pair of shorts, no shirt. The alleged killer is wounded in the leg.

According to witnesses, the man entered without saying a word and fired. He would have had an “AR-15 rifle”, a semiautomatic weapon. There are those who say they have saved themselves by escaping to the mall bathroom, those who say they risked their lives to buy a packet of potato chips.

The president’s speech is expected today Joe Biden which has a part in its electoral program dedicated to arms control. Certainly not the sales ban, but stricter legislation and with controls it is hoped for by a large part of moderate public opinion. With both chambers having a Democratic majority, it could be the right time for tighter arms sales laws already introduced after the Parkland, Florida high school massacre in February 2018, and stopped by the Republican Senate.
