Shooting leaves bus passenger dead and five others shot in RJ

THE shootout between police and criminals in the Complexo de Israel region left one person dead and five others injured in Rio de Janeiro, this Thursday morning (24).

A Military Police operation against cargo and vehicle thefts in the community resulted in the exchange of gunfire. Avenida Brasil was closed in both directions in the region.

THE CNN found out that six people were shot and one of them died. Three victims were taken to Dr Moacyr Rodrigues do Carmo Municipal Hospital, in Duque de Caxias.

  • Paulo Roberto de Souza, aged 60, arrived at the hospital already dead. He was shot in the head.
  • Geneilson Ribeiro, 49 years old, was intubated and is in very serious condition . He was also hit with a puncture wound to the skull.
  • Alayde dos Santos Mendes, 24, is in stable condition after being shot in the right thigh.

Others three victims They were taken to the Bonsucesso Federal Hospital.

  • Renato Oliveira, 48 years old, is currently undergoing surgery.
  • An unidentified 27-year-old man was released from hospital after being shot in the right arm.
  • An unidentified 27-year-old man was shot in the buttock and remains hospitalized. The suspicion is that he is one of the criminals involved in the shooting.

In a video circulating on social media, it is possible to see several people crouching down, trying to protect themselves from the shots. See below.


The PM’s operation aimed to curb the theft of cargo and vehicles. Military police officers from the 16th BPM (Olaria) with support from the 3rd BPM (Méier) and the 4th BPM (São Cristóvão) participate in the action.

The Fogo Cruzado Institute, which monitors incidents involving exchanges of fire in Greater Rio, reported shootings in the Cidade Alta region since shortly after 6am this Thursday.

Rio de Janeiro’s municipal health and education departments reported units impacted by the shooting this morning.

  • 4 health units suspended their services
  • 17 school units were impacted

SuperVia and Rio Ônibus reported that several stations and bus lines were also affected by the closure of Avenida Brasil.

  • Five train stations closed: Penha Circular, Brás de Pina, Cordovil, Parada de Lucas and Vigário Geral
  • 35 bus lines affected
