Shorter trips and generation Z boost Brazilian tourism in the post-pandemic

Current Brazilian tourism received a new wave of people and also prospered a new traveler profile when compared to the pre-pandemic period.

This is what a survey commissioned by Google revealed on Thursday (23) at the Think Travel event at the company’s headquarters in São Paulo.

The study reveals that the number of people wanting to travel this year grew by 10% compared to 2019. The data is pulled by Brazilians who, about three years ago, did not have the habit of traveling.

Of this amount, the most of the public, about 28%, belongs to Generation Z which corresponds to those born from the second half of the 1990s to 2010.

Elderly people over 65 years old, mainly represented by baby boomers also stand out and represent 7% of these new travelers.

The study also reveals that the classes C, D and E helped to revive national tourism : four out of five new travelers, or 82%, belong to these socioeconomic groups, which are largely residents of the Midwest, Northeast and North regions.

In total, the survey heard 1,000 Brazilians aged 18 and over who are regular travelers or intend to travel this year. The data were complemented with searches made by Brazilians on the Google Brazil website.

Analysis of site searches revealed that the Brazilians have preferred shorter trips like this have been looking for land modes of displacement and more concerned with hosting .

In the first months of 2023, searches for routes up to 250 km grew by 156% compared to the same period in 2022. On the other hand, routes longer than 3,500 km fell by 77%.

According to big tech, three day trips had a jump of 130% compared to the same period last year.

Débora Bonazzi, head of business for the Travel segment at Google Brazil, says that land travel is “the hottest thing”. Google data shows there has been a 26% increase in searches for bus travel and a 44% increase in car rentals compared to 2019.

However, even with a 3% drop in the period analyzed, the company claims that, for the first time, searches for airline tickets are reaching the same levels as in the pre-pandemic period.

The concern with accommodation also stood out: inquiries for hotels had a 97% jump in Brazil in the period of January and February 2022 compared to the same period of 2019.

In this context, one more care with the location . Searches with the term “well located” grew 238% this year compared to 2022; already ‘hotels near me’ had an increase of 412%.

Among the most desired destinations when comparing pre- and post-pandemic periods, the study highlights interest in the North East , farm resorts and hotels , cities with ecotourism and even countries in Europe and Asia, Africa or Oceania.
