Sicily: Health official accused of altering coronavirus victim numbers

Illegal proceedings regarding the publication of the daily number of its victims coronavirus brought to light an investigation by the Trapani Prosecutor’s Office in Sicily, its largest island Italy.

According to Trapani’s judges, the regional health officer, Ruggero Racha, together with his closest associates, they distorted the data and reduced their number deaths, to avoid declaring the island an “orange” or “red” zone.

According to the response of APE-MPE, Ratsa resigned today (30/03) from his duties, while three of his associates were placed under house arrest.

The whole investigation concerns, in total, ten senior officials of the region. According to Italian media in Sicily, inaccurate data were published at least 40 times in a total of five months.

Typical is the phrase heard in a telephone surveillance, in which officials in the health sector of the region, agree to “distribute the number of deaths from coronavirus, in a period longer than that of just one day.”

According to Italian commentators, the main purpose of this illegal tactic was to maintain the favor of the citizens, with the most relaxed measures and prohibitions.
