Significant growth prospects for Greek exports to Jordan

The advantages presented by the Jordanian market for Greece and the cooperation opportunities that Greek exporters can take advantage of, were raised by productive executives during a relevant event entitled “Discover Jordan”.

The event was co-organized by the Exporters’ Associations of Northern Greece (SEVE) and Greek Businesses (SEV), the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EVEA) and Enterprise Greece, with the sponsorship of Eurobank and the support of the Greek Embassy in Jordan and Jordan. The main areas of interest are food, medicine, construction materials, energy and environmental works, as stated in today’s announcement by SEVE.

The growth rate of the Jordanian economy was pointed out at the event to be much higher than the standards of the region, which is favored by the significant production of phosphates and potash and by the well-developed tourism sector. In addition, the cost of employment in the Middle East market is competitive with other MENA countries (Middle East and North Africa), such as Tunisia, Morocco and Iran.

Jordan has developed significant regional and international connections that facilitate trade flows, and its open trade regime and numerous free trade agreements make it an attractive destination for international trade. The relatively low fiscal burden for businesses, as well as taxation, is beneficial for attracting investors to Jordan. Also, due to the continuous investment in Renewable Energy Sources, Jordan has emerged as a regional leader in the development of solar energy.

Greek products are popular in the Jordanian market

The volume of trade between Greece and Jordan may be low, with total trade amounting to 69 million euros, but Greek products, from most sectors of the Greek economy, are popular and show great prospects for penetration in the Jordanian market. .

For 2021, imports from Jordan amounted to 29 million euros (+ 51%) compared to 2020 and among others concern copper, salt, cement, aluminum, machinery and boilers, plastics and fertilizers.

At the same time, Greek exports to Jordan amounted to 40 million euros in 2021, showing an increase of 4% compared to 2020. Greece’s main exports to Jordan were related to fruits and nuts, pharmaceuticals, minerals, electronic equipment , cosmetics and plastics.

Imports to Jordan at 15 billion euros – Great prospects for Greece

The position that there are great opportunities for increasing Greek exports in the Jordanian market, where imports amount to 1.5 billion euros, was expressed at the event by the Executive Vice President of SEVE, Panagiotis Hasapis, saying that after Covid and post-war situation in world trade and the world economy “demonstrates the need for a wide portfolio of partnerships and strategic alliances with friendly and high-profile countries such as Jordan”.

“Bilateral trade with Jordan has not developed to the extent we all want. But the margins for improvement are significant as Greek products are popular for their quality and good prices. It is important to intensify bilateral trade relations and Greek companies to take advantage of the opportunities presented “, pointed out the Deputy General Manager of SEV, George Xirogiannis.

“Jordan is the most globalized country in the region, with a highly developed banking sector and a competitive economy”, stressed on his part the member of the administrative committee of EVEA, Dimitris Dimitriou. He stressed that “the excellent level of bilateral political relations between Greece and Jordan is reflected in the close cooperation between the two countries in the framework of International Organizations, while it is noteworthy that a large number of Jordanians are graduates of Greek Universities, which contributes significantly to the very positive image of Jordanians. for our country “.

Among other things, he underlined the friendly relations between the two countries and the possibility of creating new investment opportunities and relations, focusing on the banking sector, services, IT and start-ups.

“In the post-Covid era, there is great potential for strengthening trade ties between the two countries,” said Enterprise Greece CEO George Filiopoulos.
