British singer Liam Payne still counted on “the advice and guidance” of the music producer Simon Cowell in the months leading up to his tragic death on October 16th. According to Simon’s brother, the journalist Tony Cowell the former member of One Direction had a close relationship with the judge on the talent show in which the boyband was formed.
In an interview with the British edition of OK! magazine, Tony reported that Liam liked to take his seven-year-old son, Bear, from his relationship with British singer Cheryl, to play with the executive’s son, Eric, 10 years old.
“Over the years he always kept in touch with Simon. A few months ago, he visited Simon at his home in the Cotswolds region [na Inglaterra] and took Bear along because he knew Simon’s son Eric would be there. He felt so comfortable with Eric and Simon. He still looked to Simon for advice and guidance. Over the years, when he was dealing with problems and trying to find himself, Simon would always try to help him. They had a lot of respect for each other,” he said.
Tony explained that the musician was not looking for validation, but wanted to improve himself in different aspects of life, both in his career and in his role as a father and friend.
“Liam wasn’t looking for approval, but he wanted to learn what he could improve, whether on stage, as a father or as a friend. He was so kind, had time for everyone and truly cared. He evolved as an artist and performer, but always maintained that humility. He made a point of having time for everyone, he was very attentive and generous.”
Tony met Liam during his participation in the program “The X Factor”, in 2010, and believes that the decision to end One Direction’s activities marked the beginning of the star’s personal problems.
“It was hard for him to see some of the other kids going their own way. None of us know what it was like to be in their shoes and experience the ups and downs they went through. I think the end of the band was the point at which Liam started to lose his way. He saw Harry’s career [Styles] take off, becoming a global superstar as a solo artist. That must have hurt a lot as he wondered what he was going to do. He didn’t want to take credit for other people’s success, but he was a little lost in himself. Being surrounded by the warmth of our family seemed to help him.”
