Singapore to decriminalize sex between men, announces prime minister

Singapore will decriminalize sex between men, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Sunday, adding that society in the city-state is becoming more gay-friendly.

Although he no longer considers it a crime, the prime minister said the government has no intention of changing Singapore’s legal definition of marriage – that is, between a man and a woman.

“I believe this is the right thing to do, and something that most Singaporeans will now accept,” he said during his annual National Day speech.

According to Lee Hsien Loong, the government will repeal Section 377A of the penal code, a colonial-era law that criminalizes sex between men.

“Even if we repeal Section 377A, we will uphold and safeguard the institution of marriage… Under the law, only marriages between a man and a woman are recognized in Singapore.”
