Singer Bono and Pope Francis show harmony during event in Rome

They didn’t sing together, but the singer of U2, Bono, and Pope Francis were attuned to their concerns for the planet and the power of women to change the world when they met in Rome this Thursday (19).

Bono, 62, and the Pope, 85, were the stars of the event organized by the Scholas Occurentes a worldwide network of schools that promotes virtual and face-to-face meetings and seeks to reinforce educational opportunities.

The movement was founded in Argentina, the pope’s country, when he was still Archbishop of Buenos Aires and has since spread to more than 70 countries, many in the developing world.

In a question and answer session at the University of Rome, Irishman Bono asked the pope: “Girls’ education is a superpower in the fight against extreme poverty and I would like to ask if His Holiness believes that women and girls can play a powerful role. in the fight against the climate crisis”.

The pope, who has often called for more respect for the environment and warned against the dangers of global warming, responded: “We always speak Mother Earth and not Father Earth,” drawing laughter from Bono and the audience.

“Women know more about harmony than men,” said the pope, who remained in a wheelchair during the event because he suffers from knee and leg pain.

At one point, an organizer said there was a surprise.

Former Brazilian player Ronaldinho Gaúcho appeared and handed a shirt with his name and number 10 on the Pope, who is a football fan.
