Singer Cocoa Tea, reggae icon, dies at 65

The reggae singer Cocoa Tea died 65 years on Tuesday (11), in Fort Lauderdale, Florida . The information was confirmed by his wife, Malvia Scott.

He died in a city hospital after fighting health problems in recent years, including a lymphoma diagnosis in 2019 and complications due to pneumonia.

According to Malvia, Cocoa Tea was transferred to the hospital due to an episode of vomiting. Despite the fight against the disease, the wife described the singer as brave and hopeful, noting that, even in the final weeks of her life, Cocoa Tea maintained a positive attitude and reassured her family saying that everything would look good.

Cocoa was born in 1959 in the city of Rocky Point, Clarendon, Jamaica, and began his career in music in the 1980s, being a prominent reggae figure in the 1990s. His most famous song, “Riker’s Island”, was released in 1990 and had a remix with Nardo Ranks.

In addition to his musical career, Cocoa Tea also supported Barack Obama’s candidacy in 2008 with the song “Barack Obama”. His last album, “Sunset in Negril”, was released in 2014.

The singer leaves his wife Malvia and eight children.
