The collapse of the ceiling of a nightclub in the city of Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, on Tuesday (8), killed at least 113 people, including famous figures in the country and worldwide.
Dominican meringue singer Rubby Pérez, 69, performed at the nightclub at the time of collapse and ended up dying. The body was found by rescuers only on the morning of Wednesday (9).
Days before the show in Santo Domingo, Perez had performed at a Dominican restaurant in New York. His official profile confirmed his death in a publication on social networks.
“It is with deep regret that we inform the death of our dear Rubby Pérez. We sincerely thank all the love, support and solidarity we received from your family, friends and followers during this difficult time. Your musical and human legacy will live forever in our hearts. Peace to your soul,” he wrote.
Nelsy Milagros Cruz Martinez, governor of the province of Monte Cristi, in the north of the country, also died after the collapse, said President Luis Abinader. She was the sister of former baseball player Nelson Cruz of the Main League of Baseball (MLB in English).
The brother paid a tribute to Nelsy on social networks, informing that a wake open to the public would be made so that they could say goodbye to the governor.
Other victims were former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, the local authorities confirmed.
Dotel was rescued, but died on his way to a local hospital after being removed from the rubble, a spokesman for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Sport.
The 51-year-old former player debuted for the New York Mets in 1999 and played in several teams until 2013.
Details about Blanco’s death were not disclosed, and was confirmed only after the release of a Baseball League statement.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic death of former Major League player Tony Blanco in Tuesday’s tragedy in the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. […] Our thoughts and prayers are with your family, which includes Pittsburgh Pirates’s smaller league player Tony Blanco Jr., ”he shared.
More than 100 dead
So far, authorities report that 113 people have died in collapsing the ceiling structure of the Jet Set nightclub, a tourist spot of the Dominican capital.
About 155 people were injured.
At the event were politicians, athletes and other famous figures.
Also among the victims is Eduardo Guarionex Estrella, son of the Dominican Minister of Public Works and Communications, Eduardo Estrella. He and his wife died in the collapse, the glass was found in the rubble on Wednesday (9).
