Sinner and Berrettini, two Italians in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open

Roland Garros 1973, practically fifty years ago. Then, for the last time, two Italians reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament. Today I am Matteo Berrettini e Jannik Sinner to retrace the steps of Adriano Panatta and Paolo Bertolucci. They are both in the quarter-final draw of theAustralian Open.

On Sunday Berrettini beat the Spanish Carreno Busta, on Tuesday he will challenge the French Gael Monfils. Sinner beat the Australian on Monday Alex De Minaur, 7-6 6-3 6-4 in two hours and 35 minutes, will be back on the field on Wednesday for the quarterfinals. Sinner is the youngest to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Slam since 2015. Until yesterday only three Italians in history had reached the quarter-finals in Australia, De Stefani, Pietrangeli and Caratti in 1991.

Statistics aside, the splendor of Italian tennis tastes like a fairy tale. And everyone talks about it. Including tennis legends. The catchphrase of the week is Sinner’s super coach. Who would it be? He proposed John McEnroe. «When John speaks we all know that he is a legend, so yes… Let’s see what comes out» said Sinner who for now seems to be comfortable with his team led by Riccardo Piatti.

“I am available for a part-time job to help Jannik Sinner become a great player,” explained the former American player, “even if he will become one regardless of whether I coach him or not. I told to Riccardo Piatti that if he wants my help to train this splendid Italian player, to improve him and help him grow, I would be very happy. I saw him train last year during the US Open and he’s really a sponge ». A photo together is already there: it is from last year and it sees the teams of the two Azzurri, Sinner and Berrettini, together with the American champion.

Confrontation with the greats is always needed. Above all because the goal of Jannik, who is only twenty years old, for now is to continue along the path of growth: “Last year was long for me, with many tournaments: I had many new experiences and I think I have grown as a player and as a person ».
