Situation in Gaza is becoming “more apocalyptic”, warns UN

The situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly “apocalyptic”, the United Nations’ top humanitarian aid official said on Monday (05).

“Every time we think things can’t get any more apocalyptic in Gaza, they do,” Martin Griffiths said in a statement. “People are being forced to move again, with little to survive on, forced to make one impossible choice after another.”

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator added that no one and no place is safe in Gaza.

“Such disregard for basic humanity must end,” he said, calling for an end to the fighting.

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Sunday (03) that they are expanding their ground operations throughout Gaza, following the end of the truce with Hamas last week.

“Troops are resuming and expanding the ground operation against Hamas strongholds throughout the Gaza Strip,” Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said at a news conference.

“Our policy is clear: we will attack with force any threat that poses our territory.”

Israeli officials told civilians to leave parts of Gaza, including some southern neighborhoods where many Gazans fled after the Israeli operation began.
