The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro carried out, this Tuesday (28), an operation to combat the monopoly on the sale of water and other services in the community of Gardênia Azul, in Jacarepaguá, in the West Zone of the capital.
The site is the target of a territorial dispute between drug dealers from one of the largest criminal factions in Brazil and militiamen.
Agents from the Consumer Police Station and the Police Station for Repression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Inquiries take part in the action, with support from stations of the General Department of Specialized Police.
Six people have been arrested so far. A clandestine internet center was also blown up.
The investigation is looking into whether bottles of water with red and blue labels would be marketed by rival criminal groups vying for the region, which is currently dominated by militiamen.
On the last day 22, a local water trader was murdered by criminals.
Ironaldo Salvador de Alcântara, 51, was shot inside the establishment itself. A man reportedly got out of a vehicle and shot at him.
One of the motives investigated was the merchant’s refusal to buy water from the group that operates in the locality.
According to the police, today’s action also aims to reduce the gang’s sources of income and interrupt illegal trade and services, which generate great profit and are exploited by the criminal organization.
