The mayor of Paraty, Luciano Vidal (MDB-RJ), said in an interview with CNN that six people from the same family died this Saturday (2), as a result of a landslide caused by heavy rains that hit the municipality since Friday.
The house where the victims lived was in an isolated area of the city, in a region of preserved forest, according to the mayor.
The fatal victims were João, 2 years old, Estevão, 5 years old, Yasmin, 8 years old, Jasmin, 10 years old, and Luciano, 15 years old, in addition to his mother, Lucimar.
“We only found one girl, the other bodies are still under the rubble. They died buried around 7 am”, said the mayor.
The only victim who managed to be saved from the rubble was the 9-year-old boy Dorqueu. Luciano Vidal stated that the child was stabilized at the Hugo Miranda Municipal Hospital.
Heavy rains caused by a cold front hit cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro on Friday night (1st) and early this Saturday (2nd). At least nine people died due to the impacts of the storms until now.
The State Civil Defense and the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ) reported that they work together to prevent and minimize damage caused by the rains.
