Six people were injured in a shooting on Wednesday at a school campus in East Oakland, California, in the United States. Authorities are looking for the shooter.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting shortly after 12:45 pm local time at a school campus that houses four different schools, said Oakland Assistant Chief of Police Darren Allison. Schools range from elementary to high school.
When officers arrived at the scene, they “immediately” entered the school and found six adults who had “some affiliation with the school” shot, Allison explained. However, she did not specify whether the victims were students or staff.
All six victims were transported to hospitals, including two who were life-threatening.
A third victim was released, two were awaiting release and the last was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police are looking for at least one shooter, although more people could be involved, Allison added.
“Whenever there’s a shooting in our community, it’s a complete tragedy,” lamented Allison. “But as a parent, I completely understand the fear, the emotion, the panic, when shootings are taking place in our schools, with our children, and it’s completely unacceptable.”
Officers conducted a “methodical” search of the school earlier in search of more evidence, police spokesman Paul Chambers told AFP. CNN . Authorities still don’t know whether the shooting was a random incident or targeted people who knew each other, Chambers claimed.
The Oakland Unified School District reported that there was an incident on the “King Estate campus on Fontaine Street, which is home to Rudsdale Continuation and Newcomer High Schools, BayTech Charter School and the headquarters of the Sojourner Truth Independent Study, which has no students on site.”
“The campus is close to the Oakland Academy of Knowledge (OAK), but it is important to note that the incident did not take place in OAK, nor did it have anything to do with that elementary school,” he said.
The Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was also responding to the scene.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, in a statement on Twitter, called the shooting “an act of horrific violence that has become all too familiar.”
“Once again, our children were in the crossfire. This cannot continue – gun violence has taken so much from our communities,” she added.
