Sky News Analysis: Why the Trump – Putin Meeting in Alaska raises expectations for ceasefire in Ukraine

Vladimir Putin’s forthcoming meeting with Donald Trump in Alaska is not just a diplomatic event. For Moscow, it is already considered a great political and communicative victory – even before any peace plan is discussed. In order for the visit to take place, the US Treasury must, albeit temporarily, remove the sanctions imposed on the Russian president. This is the same tactic implemented last April, when Kremlin’s envoy, Kiril Dmitryv, traveled to Washington. Such a move, however limited, sends a clear message: Washington, instead of imposing new sanctions as Trump had recently threatened, will remove one.
