Slovakia – Coronavirus: Authorities consider tougher measures as hospital admissions rise

An increase in the number of COVID-19 patients has intensified pressure on hospitals in Slovakia as the country’s parliament debates a law that will allow tougher measures to stem the new coronavirus epidemic.

The central European country of 5.5 million recorded 6,546 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours – slightly less than the previous record of 7,055 – while hospitalizations rose to 2,532 in the country, according to the Ministry of Health.

Some hospitals now need to limit their non-emergency services.

Slovakia is stepping up restrictions as the number of cases increases, but the measures it is taking are less stringent than those imposed during previous waves of the new coronavirus. At the same time less than half of the country’s population has been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Following rapid procedures, parliament began debating a bill that, if passed, would allow service companies, such as restaurants, to operate only for people who have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

It will also force employers to test staff regularly and will require employers and public event organizers to ban anyone who does not follow pandemic rules or is tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Authorities will also be empowered to close non-compliant companies for 30 days.
