Slovakia: Fico’s party lost in the European elections to the Liberals

A surprise occurred in Slovakia with the first place of the liberal party that prevailed over Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Smer-SD faction in the European elections. Mr Fitzow’s faction, which opposes more military aid to Ukraine, was seen as the favorite in opinion polls, in which the attempt on his life boosted support for it. The social democratic party Smer-SD expressed via Facebook its “congratulations to the winner of the election”, the faction Progresivne Slovensko (PS, “Progressive Slovakia”). Coming off a second consecutive victory in the European elections, Progressive Slovakia secured 27.81% of the vote and will nominate six MEPs, according to results reported by the Slovak press before they were even made official. Smer-SD, with 24.76% of the vote, will send five MEPs to Brussels. The far-right Republika party took third place and will have two representatives in the EP, while two other factions, the Christian Democratic party KDH and the also social democratic faction Hlas-SD, will each have one seat.
