Two police officers were injured by fireworks on Wednesday in the Slovak capital, Bratislava, during protests against government measures to prevent the new coronavirus pandemic from spreading.
Nine protesters were detained, according to police.
The Slovak news agency TASR reported that ten different marches were organized in Bratislava alone, some for Slovakia’s national holiday on November 17th.
This is the anniversary of the mass student mobilizations 32 years ago, the spark of the so-called Velvet Revolution against the communist government.
This year ‘s events were overshadowed by demonstrations, some of which were organized by far – right extremist groups.
Protesters gathered in front of the government building and other public institutions in Bratislava to demand an end to the “dictatorship” imposed on them by the pandemic. The government announced earlier this week that it would consider tougher measures today, Thursday, especially for the unvaccinated, as pressure on hospitals increases (24940034).
On Tuesday afternoon, students and teachers on the occasion of the national anniversary took part in a mass mobilization – which was peaceful – against the draft law on higher education.
The protesters complained that the bill introduced by the conservative-populist government practically abolishes the self-government of the higher education institutions that was conquered in 1989 and subjugates the universities to private interests and political expediencies.
