Its citizens go to the polls Slovakia in a referendum on the constitutional revision that will allow early elections to be called, as is customary in other European Union countries.
The Constitution states that the Parliament cannot be dissolved before the completion of the four-year termeven in the event that a government collapses and it is not possible to form a new coalition that will secure a parliamentary majority.
Conducting referendum asked the center-left opposition, after all approximately 400,000 signatures were collected by citizens with the right to vote.
A conservative three-party coalition is currently in power, lacking a parliamentary majority. The opinion polls do not give him any chance in case early elections are called. For this reason, after all, the parties that make it up tried to prevent the holding of a referendum.
The referendum will be considered valid if the participation exceeds 50%. Such a turnout has never been achieved in Slovakia, except in the country’s EU accession referendum 20 years ago.
The next parliamentary elections in Slovakia are scheduled for February 2024.
Polling stations opened at 7am and polls will close at 10pm (local time, 23:00 Greek time).
