Slovakia: Robert Fico’s populist party leads with more than 90% of votes counted

In the driver’s seat is the populist party Smer-SD (“Direction-Slovak Social Democracy”), of three-time former prime minister Robert Fico, after the parliamentary elections held last Saturday in Slovakiasecures 23.69% with 90.15% of polling stations integrated.

The centre-liberal Progressive Slovakia (PS) party of European Parliament vice-president Michal Šimeča, which according to two exit polls was on its way to victory, has now moved into second place, garnering 15.68% of the vote, ahead of Peter Pellegrini’s HLAS-SD, which falls to 15.43%.

Yesterday’s election in the EU and NATO member state of 5.4 million people was seen as decisive for whether Bratislava will remain on a path of alignment with the West or turn to Russia. The election campaign was marked by high levels of misinformation online.

In any case, the winning party will need to ally with smaller ones to form a government with a majority in Slovakia’s 150-seat parliament.

The next government will replace a center-right coalition in power since 2020 that has changed three times in three years, but has provided significant military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

During a stormy election campaign with many bitter clashes between the candidates, Mr. Fico came out against the European Union, NATO as well as LGBTI+.
