Slovenia, which is planning to build a second reactor at its only nuclear power plant, canceled a planned public consultation on the issue by a decision of its parliament on Thursday. The referendum was scheduled to be held next month. In 2021, the authorities issued a permit for the new unit, which will be installed at Kirksko station. A referendum, which would however have a purely advisory nature, was scheduled to be held on November 24, in order to approve the project. But 69 of the 90 members of the Slovenian Parliament approved a resolution yesterday, Thursday 24/10, canceling the procedure. The text approved yesterday raises “doubts about the ability of voters to make a sound, independent and responsible decision on a national long-term major issue”. The same parties that wanted a referendum eventually backed out, due to the uncertain outcome of the vote, following criticism of a lack of transparency mainly from environmental groups.
