Slovenia's conservative opposition tabled a motion of no confidence today, blocking a vote to be held tomorrow by parliament on the recognition of the state of Palestine, following the example of Spain, Ireland and Norway. Former Prime Minister Janez Jansa's Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) has called for a consultative referendum on the Palestinian recognition decree, delaying the recognition for at least a month, a parliamentary representative announced. Parliament will now have to decide on this proposal at its next meeting on June 17 and, if it is rejected, which is highly likely, it will be able to continue the recognition process from July 8 onwards. Last week the government submitted the decree for ratification by parliament, speeding up the process that was originally due to start in mid-June. A simple majority is sufficient for approval.
