Small businesses in Rio account for 10.82% of Brazilian exports

With the participation of 10.82% of micro and small companies (MPE) in Brazilian exports, the state of Rio de Janeiro repeated in 2020, the third place occupied among those that most export in Brazil. In front are São Paulo and Minas Gerais. In the previous year, the volume had reached 12.49%.

The main export destination of micro and small companies (MPE) in the state of Rio is China (47%), followed by the United States (21%). Most of the agenda is occupied by oil, which exceeded 70% of the turnover in 2019 between crude oil and direct by-products.

The numbers are part of the study carried out by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), in partnership with the National Confederation of Industry (CNI).

Data from the World Trade Organization (WTO) indicate that Brazil was the 27th largest exporter in the world in 2019. Although the results are positive, the pace of growth slowed down a little compared to the period 2015-2019. While in 2019 Brazilian exports reached approximately US$ 221.1 billion, featuring a decrease of 4.6% compared to 2018, in 2020, the fall with a new contraction rose to 5.4%, totaling the value of US$ 209 .2 billion.

For the Sebrae Rio International Business coordinator, Miriam Ferraz, the country needs to conquer new markets. “Brazil’s share in international trade varies between 0.9% and 1.3%, still very insignificant for the world’s eighth economy, demonstrating that there is a great opportunity for Brazilian products and services to conquer new markets. The international market is, therefore, a promising alternative for those who want to expand their business and reach new customers”, he said.

Participation

Of the 25 thousand companies that export in the country, 9,500 are small. Even with this significant participation in the number of companies, micro and small exporters account for less than 1% of the amounts negotiated.

According to a survey by the Ministry of Economy, in 2020 the micro and small companies that exported the most were concentrated, among the segments of machinery and equipment, metal products, chemicals, clothing and textiles.

To guide exporters, Sebrae has the Opportunity Space, which assesses Brazil’s export potential in dollars in the highlighted target markets.
