Smallpox: Spreads in Portugal and Spain – First Cases in Scotland and Denmark

Global alarm has sounded because of blessing of monkeys which continues to increase its cases. Infections are on the rise in Portugal, Spain and Italy, with Scotland and Denmark reporting the first cases.

Portuguese authorities reported 14 new confirmed infections today, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 37. In neighboring Spain, health authorities in the Madrid region today confirmed four new cases bringing the total to 34. Also in Madrid there are 38 other suspected cases of smallpox in monkeys while in Italy four.

At the same time, Denmark, as broadcast by the Athenian News Agency, reported the first confirmed case of smallpox. This is an adult man who returned from a trip to Spain, is now in isolation and his contacts are being traced, the Ministry of Health said in a statement today.

Scotland also confirmed its first case today, the Scottish Public Health Authority said in a statement, adding that the man was receiving treatment while his contacts were being tracked.

The World Health Organization (WHO) expects other cases of smallpox to be detectedas it extends surveillance to countries where the disease is not endemic.

Smallpox, an infectious disease that usually has mild symptoms, is endemic to parts of western and central Africa. It is spread through close contact, which means that it can be limited relatively easily, by isolation and observance of hygiene rules.
