Smart traffic lights launched in Moscow: they punish for speeding

Employees of the Moscow Department of Transport in their Telegram channel officially announced the launch of a smart system that will monitor the movement of vehicles and control violations of the speed limit. Theoretically, according to representatives of the Department of Transport, the new system should reduce the frequency of speeding by motorists by forcibly turning on the red signal at the traffic light. True, so far the latest system is presented only in an experimental format, and even then only on one street in the city of Zelenograd, which is located within Moscow. If the technology meets expectations, it will be used in other locations as well.

The new system works quite simply – on a certain section of the road under the road surface, special detectors are installed that determine the speed at which the vehicle is moving. If the driver violates the speed limit set on this section of the road, the traffic light closest to the offender will turn red, forcing the reckless driver to stop. It is worth noting that the red signal will light up only in the lane along which the offender is moving – the oncoming lane and neighboring ones will be available for passage. Accordingly, traffic on all lanes will not be delayed, but drivers will have to wait on a lane with a speed violation.

The system seems to be quite effective, as a driver who violates the speed limit will have to stop at traffic lights, slowing down. It is a great solution to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles. On the other hand, this will constantly interfere with those drivers who are driving along the same lane – they will be forced to waste their time standing at traffic lights, although they themselves did not violate the speed limit.
