Smartphone addiction: 10 tips to use them less (and better)

The pandemic has changed many things, including our relationship with electronic devices, which we must use much more than before, starting with smartphone. Now a study by Lenstore that says that 76% of people globally increased the time spent on their mobile phone, 45% on their laptop, 22% on their tablet.

We Italians, however, are in the European top ten: in tenth place (first is Denmark) among the countries of the Old Continent most dependent on internet, mobile phones and social networks with 82% of the population connected, and 58% who are active in the various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok which continues to record a surge in subscribers especially among the young population (8 million downloads in Italy in the 16-24 age group).

The reasons are obvious: between work, lessons, free time that we now often spend making video calls to friends as well as on social networks, the increase in the time spent in front of electronic devices is physiological. “By working on the screens, connecting on the screens and relaxing through the use of the screens, one has become addicted to these new systems”, said the Psychotherapist Akua K. Boadteng commenting on the study.

All this, in fact, also has consequences, primarily of a psychological nature, such as the technostress that manifests itself with fatigue, irritability, insomnia, not counting it stress related to overexposure to the media and therefore to the accumulation of news of all kinds that crowd our brain. There are also consequences that concern the health of our eyes, because with a massive use of electronic devices the retina is overstimulated. The behavioral optometrist Bhavin Shah, commenting on Lenstore’s study, in fact explained that “staring at screens can cause temporary blurring of vision, increasing the need to use glasses and worsening eye discomfort and work performance”. From the first lockdown, in particular, Shah noted «a increase in cases of eye fatigue, dry eye and itchy eyes among those who work from home ».

Also for this reason it is important to detach yourself from the screens as soon as possible or – when it is necessary to use them – to use precautions to limit the annoyances. In the gallery above you will find 10 tips from Lenstore. Browse the gallery
