For some very strange reason, major car manufacturers are actively working on adding video games to their vehicles, as if it were a really necessary feature. Some time ago, Tesla already turned its cars into a game console on wheels, now BMW is doing the same. The company has officially announced that it is already working on adding the AirConsole service, a gaming service that typically runs on Android TV and PC, to its cars equipped with an iDrive 8-based infotainment display. Ultimately, this will significantly expand the capabilities of the entertainment system, if necessary.
The main advantage of the AirConsole service is the launch of video games via the Internet – in this case, the user does not need to have an additional external controller, since the control is via a smartphone. It is enough to scan the QR code on the car screen to turn the smartphone into a touch gamepad, after which the user can start launching one of the 180 video games from the AirConsole library. Of course, it’s worth immediately clarifying that we are talking about fairly simple video games in terms of graphics – no one will allow you to play AAA releases from the console.
And for good reason – BMW cars don’t have enough system-on-a-chip performance to run heavier video games. Moreover, shortly after the publication of the first news about video games on BMW cars, company employees announced that AirConsole will first be launched exclusively on the next generation BMW 7 Series, since at the moment it is the only vehicle in the arsenal of the manufacturer that is able to run video games on your entertainment system. This is probably a hint that cars like the iX XDrive 50 will not get video game support on their displays.
Most likely, BMW engineers will install more powerful chips in upcoming flagship cars to give users the opportunity to play comfortably while they are stuck in traffic, waiting in a parking lot or in other scenarios where the vehicle does not need to go. However, this function has one huge question – if the user already has a smartphone to play the role of a controller in a video game on the car screen, then why can’t he play something for a couple of minutes on the mobile device itself? It is strange that of all the directions of development, large companies choose video games.
