From July 1, 2021, Russian mobile users will be forced to use the domestic search engine by default. Which search engine will receive such “benefits”, the government will decide on its own. This was reported in the press service of the Ministry of Digital Science.
The Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation plans to prepare a decree by April 2021, according to which gadget manufacturers will be required to install the Russian search engine in the default browser. With the help of this project, the government wants to expand the law on the mandatory pre-installation of domestic programs on mobile devices.
According to the current law, from April 1, manufacturers are required to install 16 classes of programs on smartphones and tablets, including applications from Mail.ru Group, Yandex, Kaspersky Lab, New Cloud Technologies, as well as Gosuslugi and the Mir “. At the same time, it is important to note that on March 9 there was the second reading of the bill, in which the State Duma approved penalties for manufacturers of mobile devices who will sell smartphones without preinstalled domestic software. It is known that from July 1, 2021, a fine of up to 200 thousand rubles is provided for the sale of gadgets “not according to the law”.
The ministry noted that the pre-installation of the domestic search engine is part of a strategy aimed at import substitution and technological development of digital products. This innovation will create more comfortable working conditions for Russian developers, which will allow them to compete in the international market.
It should be noted that Yandex is the main contender for the position of the “domestic search engine by default”. After all, it is this system that is leading among Russian Internet users. If the government uses Yandex to implement the decree, then the rating of this company will increase significantly.
Recall that in January 2021, the Russian government approved a list of programs for pre-installation on mobile devices. The order was published on January 6 on the official portal of legal information. The list of required applications includes: Yandex.Browser, Yandex search engine, Yandex.Disk, Yandex.Maps, voice assistant Marusya, social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki, Gosuslugi, Mail.ru Mail, ICQ messenger and others. The order comes into force on April 1, 2021.
