Smartphone shipments up 5.7% in the third quarter, but a return to pre-pandemic levels is considered unlikely

Analysts at TrendForce have studied the situation in the smartphone market and concluded that the release of these products increased in the third quarter compared to the second by 5.7%. The growth turned out to be less than last year and even more so in 2019, before the start of the pandemic. More growth is hampered by shortages of 4G SoCs, entry-level 5G SoCs, display drivers and other components, analysts said. In total, 325 million devices were shipped in the quarter.

As for the forecast for the full year of 2021, TrendForce has lowered it to 1.335 billion units, which corresponds to an increase compared to 2020 by 6.5%. The previous forecast was 1.345 billion units and 7.3%. Analysts note that the downward correction mainly reflects the impact of the component deficit. They also expressed concern that the pandemic will lead to further weakening of demand and the market will not return to the level reached before it.

The market leader with a 21.2% share is Samsung. Its share is expected to decline to 19.4% in the fourth quarter. In second place is Apple. Its share at the end of the third quarter is 15.9%, but in the fourth quarter it is expected to grow to 23.2% due to the release of new generation models. The top five also include Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo. Their shares are shown in the table:
