Smog of pollution hits India’s capital this Saturday

A suffocating fog enveloped New Delhi this Saturday (19), as air quality plummeted into the “hazardous” category, leaving residents panting with respiratory problems and eye irritation.

The Indian capital’s iconic monuments, buildings and roads were shrouded in a fine haze, partially obscuring visibility.

“Pollution is increasing day by day as winter approaches, so Diwali (Hindu festival of lights) is also approaching, which will further lead to an increase in pollution levels. The government must do something about this,” Ashish Kumar Meena, a New Delhi resident, told local media.

Switzerland-based air quality watchdog IQAir showed the region’s air quality index as ‘369’ on Saturday, putting pollution levels in the ‘hazardous’ category.

Dangerous air quality in New Delhi is further exacerbated by the burning of crop residues by farmers in neighboring states including Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

New Delhi was ranked as the most polluted capital in the world last year by IQAir.
