Smoke from Amazon fires reaches São Paulo; Residents report “strong smell”

Residents of the city of São Paulo reported smelling smoke this Friday morning (9).

On Thursday (8), Climatempo had warned of the cloud generated by fires in part of Amazonas, Acre and Mato Grosso, which spread over Brazil, and which would also reach a large part of the Midwest, Paraná and even in part of the state of São Paulo.

The Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (CETESB) said the agency’s Air Quality Division is investigating the fumes and monitoring air quality.

“[A divisão] is carrying out a detailed investigation of the data from the air quality monitoring stations distributed by the RMSP. We will inform you as soon as we have more consolidated data on the occurrence”, says the note.

This is not the first time that smoke from fires in the Amazon region has reached the Southeast.

In 2019, day turned to night on August 19 in São Paulo, in part due to the arrival of smoke from the fires.

Why does it happen

With the fires, inhalable (fine) particulate materials are released, formed by secondary processes from the burning of forests and also fuel.

According to Climatempo, part of this particulate matter arrived from the North to the state of São Paulo, due to winds at an altitude of 1.5 km, which come from the North to the South and Southeast of the country. Satellite images show the smoke cloud approaching of State.

Users report burning smell

“Guys, what is this unbearable smell of smoke that is taking over São Paulo, apparently?”

“If you’re from São Paulo, you probably woke up to the smell of burning in the air today. It is the smoke from the fires of the Amazon that arrived in São Paulo”

“This burning smell since morning is making me short of breath”
