Snow was complicating rescue efforts on Wednesday to reach a group of climbers hit by an avalanche in the Indian Himalayas that killed at least 10 people, with more than 20 missing, a regional police official told Reuters. .
The group, made up of 34 trainees preparing for the high-altitude climb and accompanied by seven instructors, was hit by the avalanche at 8:45 (local time) on Tuesday (4).
“Getting to the site is a little difficult for teams because there is a lot of snow in the area,” Ashok Kumar, police chief in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, said by phone.
“The climbers may have been pushed to isolated spots.”
The group was returning from a mountain peak, Draupadi ka Danda-II, at 5,670 meters high, when the avalanche occurred.
Eight were rescued, Kumar added.
