Snow White, the review of the film in live action

Once upon a time there was a princess to be saved with the “kiss of true love”. Today, however, Snow White He is saved alone, indeed it is she who goes to the rescue of the others, is a kind of idealist leader with seven dwarfs and many bunnies and birds in tow. In short, we are finally there: after years of postponements and controversies, the new live-action version of the Disney classic, simply named after Snow Whiteshe arrived in theaters with a character updated in our times Woke (or perhaps already faded, after Trump’s return?), A feminist and socialist heroinready to fight against a stepmother who embodies fascism.

This new Snow White is not very interested in love and more in female empowerment and social justice, moreover there is not even a prince to marry, here the love interestas the Americans say, is a reflected bandit with a rebellious heart that opposes the regime and steals the queen to give the poor (yes, in this Snow White there is also a little Robin Hood, but we do not make confusion between different fairy tales). The kiss in the end is there, but it does not come of a bang and meaningless as in the original fairy tale: the two already know each other, love was already blossomed in the armed struggle. There would be all the premises for a sensible and interesting modernization. Fairy tales are the soil in which you try to build an imaginary for children, so it is normal that you go away as or perhaps more than in political discussions with relatives at Christmas lunch. Yet something is missing. It will be the train of the controversy, it is as if the effort of dozens of meetings between screenwriters and Disney executive who develop the plan to straighten the shooting and do not attract too many criticisms, to take the “right” values. It will be that the calculation is too much and therefore the emotion in the end is little.

Yet Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot give thickness to their roles: the first door on the screen a determined and self -confident Snow White, while the second has fun as a bad queen with a dark charm. Their interpretations, however convincing, however, are not enough to compensate for a narrative that appears with little meat, little heart. It does not help the CGI, which flattens the aesthetic of the film and makes the dwarfs (no longer dwarfs) other figures, unable to return the humanity and warmth of the original. Even the soundtrack, albeit technically impeccable, struggles to leave its mark.

And in the end, the main problem of Snow White This is precisely this: the spark is missing. Everything is clean, correct, designed to respect contemporary sensitivity, but without magic and heart. A pity, because the courage to rewrite a fairy tale in a modern key deserves more.
