Soccer player dies after fight over referee decision

A 29-year-old football player died 15 days after a major altercation broke out during a match over a disagreement with the referee’s decision, according to the Oxnard Police Department in the US state of California.

On July 10, Oxnard Police responded to reports of an altercation between two adult football teams on a high school field.

Authorities found Misael Sanchez not breathing, Oxnard police said in a statement.

“The altercation took place when the two teams disagreed with the referee’s decision,” Oxnard Police said. Sanchez was on the field playing when the fight started. “During the fight, Sanchez was assaulted by several assailants,” police said.

“My family is heartbroken and still in disbelief as we had hoped for a bright future for him,” the Sanchez family posted on a verified GoFundMe page.

Sanchez was transported by ambulance that day to Ventura County Medical Center and was listed in critical condition. He died Monday from his injuries, police said.

Oxnard Police made an arrest for the attack, but are asking for the public’s help in locating additional witnesses and videos of the incident. The city’s police department created a website to upload videos anonymously.
