Soccer player sets himself on fire in anti-police protest, dies of burns

Tunisian footballer Nizar Essaoui, 35, has died of burns he suffered after setting himself on fire earlier this week in protest against “police injustice”, his family said today (14/4).

Issawi, a former player with the country’s top team Monastir and a father of four, posted a video on Facebook in which he said the reason for his protest was because he was falsely accused of terrorism in Hafouz, Kairouan and central Tunisia.

The striker, who was single and playing in amateur leagues before his death, suffered third-degree burns and doctors were unable to save him, his brother Riyad told reporters.

Local media reported that Issawi decided to stage his extreme protest outside a police station after officers accused him of “terrorism” when he complained about the price of bananas.

A selfie video circulating on social media shows Issawi screaming: “For an argument with someone who sells bananas for 10 dinars, I am charged with terrorism at the police station. Terrorism for a complaint about bananas.’
