Social media influence on reading habits increased, research says

The survey Portraits of Reading in Brazil, carried out by IPEC, pointed out several changes in the reading habits of Brazilians.

In an interview with CNN Radio Zoara Failla, who coordinated the study, highlighted the influence of social networks in the indication of titles.

Digital influencers appear in the survey – carried out at the São Paulo Book Biennial – as the main reading indicator.

At the same time, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook influenced 28% of people to recommend what to read.

The progress is considerable when compared to the results of the 2019 Rio Bienal (13%) and FLUP (5%).

Between 10 and 29 years of age, over 60% cited digital influencers as indicators of books, which, in 2019, appeared with low percentages.

There were a thousand interviews during every day of the event, according to Zoara.

She assesses that the average number of books read by regulars is higher than the national average. In six months, those who participated in the survey responded that they read 7 books. Nationally, the number drops to 2.

“The Bible is the most read book, followed by teaching materials”, he added.

According to the researcher, the Covid-19 pandemic is also a factor that contributed to the increase in reading.

“73% report that they read more during the pandemic, with greater diversity of genres and that reading somehow contributed to their quality of life,” he said.

It is also interesting that the habit persists even in this period of improvement of the pandemic, pointed out the study.
