Catalan football club Barcelona intends to master digital assets in order to support its activities in future seasons.
Socios.com, which develops fan engagement tools for sports clubs, announced that it is investing $100 million in its own Barca Studios division, which is engaged in projects to integrate into the metaverse and create an NFT for one of the leaders of the Spanish championship.
The club said that thanks to the investment, Socios.com will receive a 24.5% stake in the company. This will allow him to accelerate the implementation of the blockchain and Web3 go-to-market strategy. The capital inflow will allow the division to focus on developing new products that incorporate digital technologies.
According to Socios, Barca Studios will have access to its Chilliz Chain blockchain, which will allow developers to issue collectible and fan tokens. And also create products in the field of decentralized finance (DeFi) and P2E games, said Socios CEO Alexandre Dreyfus:
“Barca Studios will be able to leverage our technology, experience and global reach to help roll out the club’s Web3 content strategy and generate new long-term revenue streams that will benefit Barcelona in the coming seasons.”
According to club president Joan Laporta, the digital focus has been a very important part of the sports organisation’s growth strategy. A club needs to win tournaments and delight fans, but it also needs to take advantage of the sports industry to survive, Laporta says.
Earlier, the leadership of FC Barcelona announced plans to issue its own cryptocurrency to counter clubs owned by corporations and large investors.
