Sofia Jirau; the first model with Down syndrome to present Victoria’s Secret

It is no secret to anyone that, throughout history, the modeling industry has been characterized by representing very limited beauty standards, without taking into account the fact that we live in a world where diversity and its range of qualities predominate.

However, the positive must also be highlighted. In recent years, many brands have surprised us by seeing beyond their limited stereotypes, representing minorities who also identify with fashion. Widespread inclusion has taken hold and more and more brands have taken a big step in recognizing, understanding and accepting the nature of disability, as Victoria’s Secret has just done by presenting its first model with Down syndrome.

Sofía Jirau, 25, is the Puerto Rican model who filled our hearts with happiness and pride when she shared on her Instagram account that she had fulfilled her dream of becoming a model for the most famous lingerie brand in the world for her next collection Love Cloud.

I dreamed it, I worked for it and now it is a dream come true. I can finally share my secret… I am the first Victoria’s Secret model with Down syndrome!

The talented Sofía also works as an activist, as she is a great defender of the rights of people with Down syndrome. In October 2021, she launched a campaign called “No limits”, focused on raising awareness about this condition and the challenges faced by those who suffer from it. She is also an Experience Ambassador at the Puerto Rican company INprende.

When she was only five years old, she proposed to herself to become a successful businesswoman and a model on the most important catwalks in the world, perhaps at that time she was very small, but her conviction and her dreams were bigger.

Due to her tireless efforts, her aspirations began to materialize in 2019, when she launched her own online store for clothing, accessories and home goods called Alavett.
