The Solana Foundation reports that transaction processing on the Solana network takes 0.51 W or 1,836 J. This is significantly less than most other blockchains spend confirming transactions.

In a report, analysts at the Solana Foundation note that processing a transaction on the Solana network requires slightly more energy than a query on Google Search. According to the search giant, each request spends approximately 0.3 W (1,080 J).

For comparison, in the ETH 2.0 network, each transaction spends 126,000 J. That is, 68 times more than in the Solana network. A transaction on the Ethereum mainnet requires 692,820,000 J, and 6,995,582,000 J is spent to process the transaction on the first cryptocurrency network.

According to the Solana Foundation, the entire Solana network spends 3,186,000 kWh per year. This is provided that the network has 1,196 validators that process 20 million transactions. The same amount of energy is spent by 986 average American households.

“The Solana Foundation will continue to work to further reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. By the end of the year, we plan to introduce a program to make the Solana validator network carbon neutral, ”the report says.

Note that in September, the Solana network did not process transactions for 17 hours due to a DDoS attack. However, according to Anatoly Yakovenko, General Director of Solana Labs, this is not a very important incident.
