Solas OLED, an Irish OLED technology licensing company, has announced a settlement and licensing agreement with LG Display. This resolves a number of patent infringement claims brought by Solas against LG Display and certain clients of a South Korean OLED panel manufacturer, including Sony. While the terms of the agreement are confidential, it is known to end relevant patent litigation between Solas and LG Display, including LG Display’s counter-actions against Solas OLED in Germany, China and the United States.

Aoife Butler, General Counsel for Solas, commented on the agreement: “We are delighted that LG Display has licensed Solas’ patent portfolio. The patent license opens the OLED TV market not only to LG Display, but also to its OLED customers, including Sony and Panasonic. However, this does not include Samsung, which continues to sell copyright infringing OLED products, including tablets, watches and phones. In addition to the recent complaint filed with the US International Trade Commission against Samsung and the BOE, Solas is now focusing on Samsung’s patent infringement litigation starting March 1, 2021 in the Eastern District of Texas District Court. Licensing Solas’ patent portfolio recognizes the true innovators, in this case scientists from the University of Stuttgart, and the university’s role in the great success of patented technology so that it can continue to develop exciting new technologies. “
Recall that lawsuits against Apple, Samsung and LG Display were filed in September 2019.
