Solastalgia, the form of eco-anxiety of those who say: “I miss my environment”

And who owns this love?
“Everyone, it’s congenital. Simply, he can express himself or not ».

Are there cases of solastalgia in Italy?
“At the University of Valle d’Aosta we took care of children who live in rural mountainous areas, who actually live like urbanized children: they no longer have time to be outdoors, because their day is marked by the rhythms of school and from other indoor activities. We therefore started a project with the primary school of Gressoney-La-Trinité, setting up a program, which lasted 3 years, with continuous outdoor teaching activities. Result: the contact with Nature has awakened the biophilia of children ».

The point, therefore, is to act on the new generations.
“I wouldn’t distinguish between generations. We have a project in the final phase with the State University of Milan, coordinated by the professor Natalia Fumagalli, which is giving interesting results on an RSA in Milan. The research team has redeveloped a garden where seniors can enjoy an outdoor space and we have observed that certain ailments attributed to senility actually result from lack of relationship. Sometimes people regain the will to live and since solastalgia manifests itself as depression, this can also apply to the elderly who are offered something alive and vital: relationships, nature and not just television. Biophilia, in fact ».

MORE “ECOCENTRIC”
Gemma Galeati, psychotherapist, psychoanalyst and ecopsychologist from Bologna, also deals with cases of eco-anxiety. Although not officially recognized as a disorder, here’s how it can be described and managed.

WHEN IT HAPPENS
“Eco-anxiety it can develop in the face of a catastrophic event or a global change, ma even as a result of an indirect awareness, or rather reflecting on intensive farming while eating a slice of meat ».

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS
«Anxiety widespread, sleep disorders, brooding in a somewhat obsessive form, even cases of panic attacks at the sight of a defaced landscape. Furthermore, at the level of thought we have a sense of helplessness».

WHO SUFFERS FROM IT
«Teenagers and young people of university age; often precisely those who study in the ecological field and are aware of the real situation. In general, there is a reaction of denial with respect to the environmental problem, but if you stop and think, it is a sensation that everyone can experience ».

HOW TO COVER
“By developing a sense of self-efficacy, of personal power. When you have these forms of anxiety it is useful to be active, to join associations. What matters is that there is a recognition of the emotional bond we have with nature. Because it is very easy to take care of the environment through forms of activism aimed simply at “saving” or “healing” the world; on the other hand, perceiving oneself as part of the world is very different, living this connection with nature, starting from a vision of oneself that is no longer egocentric but “ecocentric” ».
