A prank was cited as the motivation for a beating session of a 19-year-old soldier inside a Brazilian Army barracks.
THE CNN had access to prints of the conversation between a corporal, described as one of the attackers, with the victim and images of the case. The case occurred on Thursday (16) at the 13th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment, in Pirassununga, in the interior of São Paulo. According to the soldier’s defense, the attacks would be a rite of passage due to the young man’s engagement, who would become a permanent soldier.
Four soldiers and a corporal participated in the action. In the exchange of messages, after being questioned by the corporal, the victim soldier sent photos of his buttocks and elbows covered in bruises and the following message: “they ended my life”. The corporal then replied: “We didn’t do anything to you. You accepted the joke.”
According to the victim’s report, the corporal assigned him and two other soldiers to clean a box warehouse. Then the soldiers ordered him to clean a cold room. Upon arriving at the scene, the attackers ordered him to lower his pants, which he denied.
They then forced him to remove the item of clothing, took a broom and rubbed it between his buttocks, according to the report. The soldier managed to free himself and left the scene. However, he was attacked again in another warehouse, where he was beaten.
According to the report, the five soldiers used objects such as a broomstick, an industrial spoon and a wooden slat to beat the soldier. Most of the blows were to the buttocks and legs.
Pablo Canhadas Pereira, the young man’s lawyer, claims that the soldiers broke the broom handle while beating his colleague: “He was beaten a lot. In my opinion, this is torture”, he declared.
After the attacks, the young man had to be taken to the local emergency room, where he received medical attention.
The lawyer also reported that the young man tried to take his own life when he arrived home. The Military Police were called by family members and managed to rescue him and take him to the hospital. The fact was recorded in a police report. The soldier has already been released from the hospital and is being treated at home. He is expected to undergo further examinations this week at a military hospital.
In a statement, the Southeast Military Command reported that “a Military Police Inquiry was launched to investigate the case. Those involved will be punished and expelled from the ranks of the Army.”
“The Brazilian Army does not condone any illicit conduct involving its members”, concludes the command.
According to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat, the soldier also underwent a forensic examination, a procedure necessary for investigating the aggression.
The case was registered at the 1st Police District of Pirassununga as a bodily injury.
