Germany can help the countries of the Western Balkans join the European Union as much as possible, said Chancellor Olaf Solz, stating that he is a priority for his government.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has given a new impetus to the urgent need to connect with Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Northern Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, closer to the EU, either through full membership or an alternative community. .
Soltz’s visit follows that of European Council President Charles Michel, and ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit on 23 June.
Speaking at a news conference in Pristina with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Solz said Germany was working to convince its European partners that Kosovo had met visa requirements.
The prospect of EU membership has been for years the key driver of reform and greater cooperation in the region after a decade of war and unrest in the 1990s, until EU enlargement stalled, causing disappointment.
The Soltz government, which took office last December, has made the accession of the Western Balkans to the EU a foreign policy priority.
“We will not hand over this region to the heart of Europe, to the influence of Moscow,” Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said when she visited the region in March.
