Both Chancellor Olaf Soltz and Foreign Minister Analena Berbock speak of the immediate and harsh reactions of the international community to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The chancellor did not take more than 2 minutes to inform the German public about the German positions and the reaction of the international community to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Olaf Solz characteristically said that by attacking Ukraine, the Russian president is endangering peace in Europe. And he stressed that “this war is Putin’s war”.
The chancellor announced that he would make a government announcement at an extraordinary session of the German parliament on Sunday and said that severe sanctions would be launched jointly with G7 and EU partners. “We will prove by our reaction that Russia made a mistake in attacking Ukraine,” the German chancellor said in closing.
He also announced that he would convene a G7 teleconference today and then take part in an emergency summit in Brussels.
Burbok: We woke up in a different world
For her part, Foreign Minister Alena Berbok said earlier: “We woke up today to a different world,” stressing that Russia “prepared this conflict with lies and propaganda” and referring to the challenges of dialogue that remained unanswered by Moscow. “Russia has chosen this path solely by its own decision. The Ukrainians have done nothing to justify this bloodshed.”
According to Analena Berbok, President Putin seeks to silence democratic tendencies in Ukraine. “President Putin, you will never ruin this dream,” she told the Kremlin. The minister stressed that many in Russia are now ashamed of the actions of the Russian leadership and added that “we are embarrassed, but not helpless. As part of the G7, NATO and the EU we will launch a full package of tougher sanctions against Russia. ” At the same time, Analena Berbok called on all UN countries to condemn Russian aggression.
Closing her announcement, the Foreign Minister stressed: “This war in our neighborhood will also have an impact on Germany” and referred to rising energy costs and falling stock markets. Finally, Analena Berbock warned that if we do not resolutely defend peace in Europe, on which prosperity has been based for decades, then we will be called upon to pay an even higher price.
