Soltz and Sanchez agree on connecting the Iberian Peninsula to the European energy grid

The chancellor Olaf Solz and the prime minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez were in favor of the connection of the Iberian Peninsula with the European electricity and natural gas network.

“If there was this line, we could cover 30% of Europe’s liquefied natural gas needs,” said Mr Sanchez, who was attending the federal cabinet meeting at Brandenburg’s Meseberg Castle.

“Spain is ready to show solidarity and there are many reasons to help the countries most dependent on Russian gas so that they no longer have to succumb to this blackmail. Our friends and brothers like Germany are victims of a totally unacceptable blackmail by Putin”, said the Spanish Prime Minister and clarified that if the pipeline in question, if it is not possible to pass through France, it will have to pass through Italy. In addition, he noted, it will be able to be used in the long term for other energy sources, such as hydrogen.

On the other hand, Olaf Solz emphasized that helium-rich countries such as Spain and Portugal would produce surpluses, which could be exported. “The main task is to create a European network for all kinds of energy. More networking also creates more stable societies, economies, companies, citizens. When we do that, we all help each other,” the chancellor said.

Germany and Spain will continue, the two leaders emphasized, their close cooperation. On October 5 and 6, a meeting of the two governments will take place, hosted by Olaf Solz. At the end of the same month, the Spanish royal nation will visit Germany, specifically the Frankfurt Book Fair, as Spain is the honored country at this year’s event.
