Solz calls for EU accession talks with northern Macedonia

Federal Chancellor Olaf Solz has called for the immediate start of accession talks with Northern Macedonia, according to Handelsblatt.

“The accession talks that were promised two years ago must start now. In any case, I will push for that,” the SPD politician said today after talks with Northern Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski in Skopje.

The Chancellor reiterated that Germany is taking the accession of the Western Balkan countries to the European Union seriously. “This is especially true for Northern Macedonia. The EU is very committed to Northern Macedonia, which has met all the conditions for the start of accession negotiations.” Solz paid tribute to the “political force” that allowed the country to reach an agreement with Greece. “So we have to do the rest of the work.”

Northern Macedonia has been a candidate for EU membership for 17 years. In July 2020, the EU Commission first gave the green light for specific negotiations. However, they are being blocked by Bulgaria due to disagreements over the historiography and the rights of the Bulgarian minority in northern Macedonia.
