Solz condemns Putin threat to recognize Ukraine’s independence

German Chancellor Olaf Solz has condemned remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow could recognize the two breakaway regions (Donetsk and Luhansk) in eastern Ukraine, according to a statement issued by his spokesman.

According to the German chancellor, Olaf Solz told Putin in a telephone conversation that such an action constituted a “unilateral violation” of the Minsk agreements aimed at ending the conflict with the separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Olaf Solz also urged Vladimir Putin to withdraw Russian troops from the Ukrainian border and de-escalate tensions in eastern Ukraine. According to his spokesman, Mr. Soltz will hold talks with the leaders of Ukraine and France on developments in the crisis.
