Solz: Now is the time to reach a decision on Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today asked for a unanimous decision from the 27 EU member states for agreement on a common plan that will provide stable funding to Ukraine over the coming years.

“I think now is the time to come to a decision,” Solz told reporters upon his arrival for an emergency EU summit in Brussels. “I will work very hard to reach an agreement of all 27.”

For his part, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said today that there is no “plan B” for EU aid to Ukraine and that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is blocking it, must decide whether Hungary is “part of our community”.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also said today, ahead of the summit, that the European Union could find a way to approve financial aid to Ukraine if “Hungary is also willing to compromise.”

Asked what would be necessary to convince Orbán to drop his opposition, Rutte said it is “impossible for me now to deal with every wish” of the Hungarian leader.

The 27 EU leaders must all agree on a solution because “any other solution is too difficult“, said the Dutch Prime Minister.

“The only thing that can be done is for the 27 to agree on this,” according to Rutte.
