German Chancellor Olaf Soltz said he regretted Britain’s “unjustified” decision to introduce a bill that would abolish controls on goods moving between Britain and Northern Ireland, adding that the European Union would have a united response.
“Britain has made a very sad decision that goes against all the agreements between the EU and Britain,” he said. “It is also unjustified because the European Commission has made so many realistic proposals. The EU will be united in its response and has the full range of means at its disposal.”
Britain today announced plans to circumvent some of the post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland, lifting controls and challenging the role of the European Court of Justice in a new conflict with Brussels.
Tensions have been rising for months since Britain accused the EU of taking an authoritarian approach to smuggling goods between Britain and Northern Ireland – checks needed to keep the border with EU member Ireland open.
Dublin says Britain’s plans violate international law
Irish Prime Minister Michal Martin warned Britain on Monday that a unilateral London breach of post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland agreed with the EU would be “very serious”.
“The unilateral violation of the Protocol is very serious – an international agreement ratified by the British Parliament and approved by the Prime Minister,” Martin wrote on Twitter. “It focuses on the issue of trust,” he added.
Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coweni said the proposed legislation introduced by Britain on Monday to circumvent many post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland was a violation of international law and no one but London believed anything different.
“It’s essentially a violation of international law if this bill becomes law. I have not met anyone outside the British government who believes that it is not a violation of international law when you deliberately do not implement an international treaty,” Coveni told RTE. .
Coweni added that he did not think there was a good reason for this, as the European Union was trying to negotiate with Britain to find a compromise solution that could resolve the issues facing some companies because of the rules.
